DNA diets based on 23andme and Ancestry data are all the rage these days, but do they work? Below, we are compiling a list of the most frequently asked questions about DNA diets, both the Gene Food custom nutrition plans, as well as DNA diets more generally. If you would like to ask a question about DNA diets, or the Gene Food product specifically, please submit a question and we will do our best to get it added to this page.
How do I access my raw data from 23andme and Ancestry?
Gene Food uses raw data files from providers like 23andme and Ancestry to create the reports. Accessing raw data is easy, both providers offer instructions. 23andme users, click here for instructions. Ancestry users can visit this page for instructions. At the end of the process, you should have either a zip or txt file to share through our encrypted form.
I don’t live in the United States – can I still get a nutrition plan?
Yes! As long as you have raw data from either 23andMe or Ancestry.com, we can process your plan regardless of location. PayPal will even handle the currency exchange for you!
I have genetic data from another provider – can I still get a nutrition plan?
Each sequencing service provides your raw DNA in a slightly different format, so we can’t know for sure without actually seeing the file. Some providers exclude certain SNPs that are vital to our calculations, so we evaluate on a case by case basis. Please get in touch with us prior to your purchase to discuss. In the event we cannot process your data we will issue a full refund.
Will my nutrition plan contain recipes and real life food suggestions?
Yes, the nutrition plans offer macronutrient recommendations, but also a “system of eating” designed to make the plans easy to follow. Our V2 plans now contain access to our growing database of recipes. Each diet type has a library of recipes designed for their genotype. Recipes labeled green for your genotype can be eaten an unlimited number of times during the week. Recipes labeled yellow can be eaten 2-3 times per week, and recipes labeled red are reserved for an occasional treat.
Does the custom nutrition plan address chronic medical conditions?
In a word, no. The custom nutrition plan is not a diagnostic tool and does not offer medical advice. The goal of the plans are to provide a life long foundation for approaching nutrition decisions with the hope that the information provided will improve health and wellbeing over the long term, but the genetic data we review will not pick up on or address chronic medical conditions.
I’m having an issue purchasing a nutrition plan, who do I contact?
Please use the contact form on our Contact page to get in touch; somebody will email you shortly to assist.
Do you keep my raw genetic data?
No, we do not. Raw data files are deleted once the nutrition plans have been generated.
Can I buy a nutrition plan for a friend or family member?
You certainly can! As long as you have access to their raw DNA file to upload during the checkout process, we can put together a nutrition plan for them. Do note though that the plan will be delivered to whichever email address is used for contact during checkout.
