Science Grade

Genes, alleles, SNPs… the science of genetics can get complicated quickly, especially when trying to understand its impact on your health.

We strongly believe in making the science underlying these interactions accessible through our Genetics and Nutrition Guide, Blog and interactions with our readers.

We also believe that you should rapidly be able to identify the relative importance of the information we provide you. For this reason, we have created a star-score rating, called the Science Grade, for all our content. This system is based on our three research cornerstones:

  1. Health Impact
  2. Mechanism of Action; and
  3. Clinical Benefit

By assessing the scientific literature surrounding SNPs we are able to combine these strands to give a star-score for all our material. We also use the Science Grade to rate the scientific validity of the resources we cite in our blog discussions and for our products, as well as products we review. Below you can find the criteria we use to score all of our research.

What the Science Grade Mean

SNP
Fully validated SNP; strong association with health impact and fully experimentally validated mechanism of action, repeatable evidence of benefit at clinical trial level.
SNP
Fully validated SNP; strong association with health impact and experimentally validated mechanism of action, some evidence of benefit at clinical trial level.
SNP
Well validated SNP, association with health impact, some validation of mechanism of action or health impact performed in human models.
SNP
Well validated SNP, association with health impact, some validation of mechanism of action or health impact performed in non-human models.
SNP
SNP of interest; association with health impact, clear but untested mechanism of action.
SNP
SNP of interest; association with health impact, unclear mechanism of action but viable hypotheses.
SNP
SNP of potential interest, unclear mechanism of action, some link to health impact.
SNP
SNP of potential interest; unclear mechanism of action, no obvious link to health impact.
SNP
Identified SNP, description of variants and occurrence at genetic level in humans.
SNP
Identified SNP, no other data.
