Xtrema® cookware is an excellent eco-friendly, non-toxic, choice for almost all your culinary needs. It is ceramic through and through, and contains no metal, cadmium, lead, PFOA, PTFE, glues, polymers, coatings or dyes. Every shipment is inspected and tested for heavy metals, and Xtrema® cookware is FDA-approved and meets California Prop 65 standards, meaning that it is certified free from over 800 problematic compounds (R).
Xtrema® cookware is also environmentally-friendly as it is created using renewable raw materials and green manufacturing practices. However, it should be said that most ceramics do not last as long as cast iron or carbon steel and usually need replacing every 5-10 years. They are also difficult to recycle. Xtrema® are confident, though, that their products will last long enough to become family heirlooms, if properly cared for.
As for the actual cooking experience, Xtrema® ceramic cookware enables food to be cooked on a low heat, although it does take a little longer to heat up than metal cookware. This is because pure ceramic retains heat better than other cookware and helps food to cook evenly, inside and out. To avoid damage to ceramic cookware, warm pans slowly and keep temperatures low to moderate.
While Xtrema® cookware is not non-stick, the smooth, non-porous, ceramic glaze makes for easy cooking, once you’re used to cooking on a low to moderate heat. Let the pan warm first before adding oil. Adding oil to a cool pan will increase the likelihood of food sticking.
Xtrema® is dishwasher safe, oven safe, stove-safe, and fridge/freezer safe. It is also super easy to clean. If food does stick, it’s safe to use abrasive cleaners such as steel wool, baking soda, and even Ajax without risk of scratching the surface.
One downside of Xtrema®, and any ceramic cookware other than original Corning Ware and some Emile Henry items, is that it can break easily if dropped or banged. It is also sensitive to abrupt temperature changes and may crack if moved quickly from hot to cold or vice versa. Avoid overheating Xtrema® cookware and take care to never boil a pan dry.

Xtrema Vs. Emile Henry Cookware
Xtrema® cookware is one of the best ranges of modern ceramic cookware, offering a plethora of eco-friendly credentials and a delightful cooking experience. It is lighter than cast iron and carbon steel, presents no risk of toxicity, can be used to cook a variety of dishes and looks good in the kitchen. Unlike cast iron and carbon steel, however, it is not non-stick and is vulnerable to damage if improperly used, meaning that it may have a shorter lifespan than these types of cookware and need more frequent replacement (hence the 4.5/5 leaf rating). And, unlike classic Corning Ware and some Emile Henry items, Xtrema® is not resistant to thermal shock.
