The Pelican Water PUV-8 and PUV-16 are NSF Standard 55 certified to Class B, as confirmed by Pelican Water themselves and in the NSF listings. Some product resellers erroneously list these as certified only to NSF/ANSI 42 and 53, however, perhaps because other Pelican Water UV filters do not carry NSF 55 certification.
The 8 GPM peak flow is ideal for most homes, while the PUV-16 is a great option for larger families or small commercial enterprises with a higher water demand. According to Pelican Water, the UV lamp must be replaced after 9000 hours of continuous operation (approximately one year) in order to ensure adequate disinfection. You can use either 3/4″ fittings or 1″ fittings to install the unit.
As with all effective UV units, the Pelican Water PUV provides natural and safe disinfection without the use of harmful chemicals and does not affect taste, color or odor of the water. These systems are effective against a broader range of organisms than chlorine, and are capable of destroying E. coli, Cryptosporidium and Giardia.
These units are made with a stainless steel exterior that resists rust and corrosion. They also have a useful safety feature where the UV lamp cannot be powered on unless it is in the UV chamber. Indicator lights show the status of the system and warning lights appear when system maintenance is required, such as changing the UV light.
The Pelican UV Max comes with a three-year warranty against manufacturer’s defects on the power supply; a ten-year guarantee on the UV chamber; and a one-year warranty on lamps and UV intensity monitors.
The UV system can be combined with an activated carbon filter or you might want to opt for the Pelican Water PUV-8 Combo System which includes both alongside the NaturSoft Filter to soften water and create a whole home water filtration system.
Pelican Water PUV-8 and PUV-16 vs. Viqua E4-V vs. Viqua SV8Q-PA vs. Viqua Pro10
The Pelican Water PUV-8 is similar to the Viqua SV8Q-PA and both are Class B certified, effective, and stylish. The Viqua SV8Q-PA is much less expensive however and easier to track down. Both of these systems, and the Viqua E4-V are good options only if your water is already filtered and treated in some other way. If your water is untreated, go for the Viqua Pro10 as this carries Class A certification.
