The Liebherr Monolith MRB3000 is a 30-inch, 15 cu. ft capacity, built-in refrigerator column that rises to a staggering 84-inches, literally taking food preservation to new heights. This model is very energy-efficient, using just 305 kWh/y, while similar models use up to 447 kWh/yr.
Part of the energy saving capabilities of this refrigerator come courtesy of BioFresh, an advanced food preservation system featuring independent climate controls with the use of a divider. This function means you can create a high-humidity environment for fruits and veggies in one drawer, and a low-humidity environment for meats and cheeses in another, while a third drawer can be set as BioFresh-Plus, lowering temperatures down to 28°F, ideal for storing fresh fish and seafood. PowerCooling ensures that newly stored foods are quickly cooled, while maintaining an even temperature throughout the interior, and Monolith circulates cold air behind the door, meaning that items stored in the door stay just as cold as everything else inside.
One unique feature of this model is Liebherr’s smartphone app, SmartDevice, which links to a SmartDeviceBox that can be controlled via a smartphone or tablet, activating settings and features while on the go. SmartDevice can use internal cameras to let you see what you’re missing for any given recipe, arguably saving you time and money by making sure you don’t have to make additional runs to the store. You can even use voice recognition to order what you’re missing.
This model includes InfinitySpring, an integrated and flush-mounted internal water dispenser that accommodates pitchers of any size and uses a filtration system to eliminate harmful contaminants. And, you can safely store gallon jugs of in the door, freeing up the refrigerator’s interior shelves. Depending on which size Monolith you choose, the door hinges are rated for up to 79 pounds.
The Monolith is very quiet, with a sound rating of just 40 dBA, and even offers customizable lighting. The integrated LED side-wall lighting creates an even glow that can be adjusted according to taste, including a soft brightening effect upon opening the doors, and a night dimming feature. The Monolith also features Liebherr’s InfinitySwipe touchscreen display, an intuitive electronic touch-control panel featuring a full-color 2.4-inch touch and swipe screen that’s bright, clean, and wonderfully user-friendly.
Doors close automatically and gently thanks to SoftSystem technology, which eliminates slamming even when shelves are fully loaded, and drawers move on smooth telescopic rails for soft closing. The Monolith has a Star K certified Sabbath mode, interior stainless steel finish to help eliminate odor trapping, 4 cantilevered glass shelves, 2 crispers, and 3 adjustable door bins, and the doors are reversible and can accept custom panels.
This model also has an impressive warranty that puts it out in front of its competitors:
- Parts & Labor: 2 Years
- Sealed System: 5 Years
- Sealed System (Parts Only): 6th through 12th Year.
Liebherr were the first manufacturer to convert their entire appliance range to HCFC/CFC-free refrigerants, back in 1993, and Liebherr Appliances in North America was one of the first refrigeration manufacturers worldwide to be fully RoHS compliant by restricting the use of hazardous substances. They use environmentally-friendly powder coatings without using any solvents when finishing sheet metal, and don’t produce waste water that damages the environment. The company also recycles heat generated during manufacturing to heat their offices and production sites, and all their plastic components are labeled to ensure easy and optimum recycling. All Liebherr production sites are certified to the international quality standard ISO 9001 and to the international environmental management standard ISO 14001, and all appliances meet and, in most cases, exceed the requirements of ENERGY STAR®.
Liebherr vs. the Competition
Liebherr’s Monolith is an impressive feat of engineering, marrying style and function seamlessly. This 15 cu. ft refrigerator is very energy efficient compared to similarly-sized models (including the Samsung RT18M6213WW 29-Inch refrigerator) and is easily customized, so you can keep running costs low and performance high. This model is also super quiet and very inconspicuous in the modern kitchen. And, thanks to that comprehensive warranty, you’re in good hands with Liebherr, a company long committed to good environmental practices.
Both the Liebherr Monolith and the Samsung are Star K certified, while the Blomberg BRFB1822SSN 30-Inch refrigerator is not and doesn’t have a Sabbath mode. The Blomberg does feature that Blue Light crisper, however, and has an excellent daily ice production capacity for its size, but uses more energy than the high-performance Monolith.
If size is your main concern, the Samsung has more space at 17.6 cu. ft. compared to the Blomberg (16.2 cu. ft.) and the Monolith (15 cu. ft). The Monolith has a fantastic warranty though and is RoHS and REACH compliant, while the Samsung has the advantage of being made in the US, which gives it some upfront eco-friendliness.
All three are impressively eco-friendly, but if your money stretches to the Monolith and you don’t require a Sabbath mode, go for the Liebherr model, with its RoHS and REACH certifications and lower energy usage.
