Cradle to Cradle – Silver
Country of originUSA
EcoWorx is 100 percent recyclable and PVC-free and is being touted as the USA’s first fully sustainable non-PVC carpet tile backing. Shaw Industries, the manufacturer of EcoWorx, offer a guarantee that they will collect the product for recycling, free of cost.
EcoWorx is a low VOC product line, meeting CRI Green Label and Green Label Plus requirements. These carpet tiles feature 44% recycled content, contributing to LEED certification, and are 40% lighter in weight than traditional carpet tile backing, making for easier, cheaper, and more environmentally friendly shipping.
EcoWorx are certified by Cradle to Cradle as Banned List compliant and free from exposure to carcinogens, mutagens, or reproductive toxicants. While the product does contain some X ingredients, i.e. those that are highly problematic, the company has a plan in place to phase these out.
EcoWorx vs. Earth Weave and Nature's Carpet
EcoWorx is not without its problems. The three available high-performance Silver certified Cradle to Cradle backings all feature a thermoplastic polyolefin compound with a reinforcing layer of fiberglass, in contrast to natural jute, cotton, or hemp backings from Earth Weave and Nature’s Carpet. As these carpet tiles are treated with an antimicrobial, and are not guaranteed free from other undesirable chemicals, they are not as attractive an option as Earth Weave, Nature’s Carpet, or Interface, but do offer a decent alternative for commercial carpeting on a budget.
