The Coyuchi 100% Organic Cotton Comforter is available in white and a variety of blue colors in three sizes: Twin, Full/Queen, and King size. This quilt-weight comforter (240 GSM) is a cozy bedding option that is natural, breathable and hypoallergenic, with a 220 thread count and box stitching to help keep the fill in place for even warmth distribution. It is machine washable, comes in solid colors, is reversible, carries GOTS certification and has a 1-year warranty.
Coyuchi was founded more than 20 years ago in a small coastal Northern California town and were the first to bring organic bedding to the US. They have long produced a line of home textiles rooted in nature, including their signature bedding made from 100% certified organic cotton. They produce their goods using a zero-waste water recycling method and are committed to sustainable practices.
Coyuchi requires that their supply chain partners are fully compliant with the strictest environmental and social regulations. This includes working with European manufacturers who follow the REACH chemical standards aimed at reducing chemical risk to human health and the environment. They also adhere to the Restricted Substances List (RSL) of the American Apparel & Footwear Association (AAFA), and try to source from as many Global Organic Textile Standard (GOTS)-certified suppliers as possible.
Coyuchi also supported the development of the Responsible Down Standard by Textile Exchange (TE) and continue to support the development of TE’s Responsible Wool Standard, which is designed to be a global standard that protects animal welfare, influences best practices, ensures traceability, and gives consumers clear and trustworthy information.
They have Fair Trade certification and are a member of 1% for the Planet, an organization founded in 2002 to connect nonprofit environmental organizations to businesses and individuals who can provide direct funding to projects that help protect the planet.
Coyuchi products also carry the MADE SAFE® seal, which means that a product is made with safe ingredients not known or suspected to harm human health, animals or ecosystems. Certified products have been thoroughly examined by researchers and scientists to ensure they’re made without known behavioral toxins, carcinogens, developmental toxins, endocrine disruptors, flame retardants, heavy metals, neurotoxins, high risk pesticides, reproductive toxins, toxic solvents, or harmful VOCs. Ingredients are further examined by a chemist for the potential for bioaccumulation, persistence, general ecosystem harm, and for aquatic and animal toxicity.
Coyuchi are also involved in the Fibershed program which “develops regional and regenerative fiber systems on behalf of independent working producers, by expanding opportunities to implement carbon farming, forming catalytic foundations to rebuild regional manufacturing, and through connecting end-users to farms and ranches through public education”.
Not all standards apply to all products (yet). This cotton comforter carries GOTS, MADE SAFE™, and 1% for the Planet credentials.
Coyuchi Organic Cotton Comforter vs. Laura Ashley, Zoomie Kids, Beachcrest, and Rawganique
As an organic product, the Coyuchi cotton comforter is a great choice for the eco-friendly bedroom, and arguably the best option for an organic cotton comforter out there. Coyuchi are a company long committed to environmental sustainability and product safety, easily rivaling Rawganique for top spot in this category. That said, this product is made in India rather than in the US (like Rawganique’s organic handmade cotton comforters). Coyuchi is a much better option than Wayfair’s other 100% cotton comforters made with conventional cotton, although the Laura Ashley cotton comforter set, their fun comforter from Zoomie Kids and this stripy number from Beachcrest Home are all less expensive and arguably better than a polyester fill comforter.
For an eco-friendly cotton comforter, especially if you’re looking to shop at Wayfair, the organic cotton comforter from Coyuchi wins hands down. Coyuchi’s comforter easily rivals Rawganique’s 100% organic cotton duvet for most eco-friendly cotton comforter thanks to Coyuchi’s commitment to sustainability and product safety. It is also a little less expensive than Rawganique’s cotton duvet at around $250 compared to $460 for a Queen size at Rawganique. Coyuchi’s comforter is also GOTS certified and the company carries MADE SAFE™ and 1% for the Planet certifications.
